Buying property in Algeria from abroad: the steps

From search to signing at the notary: how to carry out a property purchase in Algeria while living abroad, without travelling for every step.

Buying remotely is entirely possible, as long as you organise the project in steps and never skip the checks.

1. Define the project

Set your total budget including purchase costs (duties, notary) — our notary fee simulator gives you an order of magnitude. Then choose one or two communes and the type of property: a home for your return, a rental investment, or a holiday home.

2. Search and shortlist

Use the listings and create an alert to hear about new properties. Shortlist a few properties rather than one: some will not pass the checks.

3. View remotely

Ask for live video tours, or have a trusted relative visit. Ask precise questions: condition of the common areas, charges, neighbourhood, work to plan for.

4. Check before committing

Have the deed reviewed by a notary you choose. Pay no deposit before that check. Our article How to check a listing details what to verify.

5. Sign without travelling

If you cannot attend the signing, you can give a power of attorney to someone you trust. It can be drawn up at the Algerian consulate in your country of residence; check which documents are required before booking an appointment.

6. After the purchase

Think about insuring the property, co-ownership charges and, for a rental investment, management: an agency can handle it for you.
